
Terrence Ling Hung Shu

Terrence Ling Hung Shu is currently a faculty member of his alma mater, the Institute of Music at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Besides coaching contemporary solo singing, he is also the director and conductor of UCSI University Mixed Choir and UCSI University Singers.
As a university student, Terrence participated in international competitions with the university choirs and won awards in China, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Terrence has been the Vice President of Dithyrambic Singers since 2012. With the Dithyrambic Singers, they performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra under the world-renowned conductors' baton: Marcello Rota (Tenor Andrea Bocelli Asia Tour 2013), Arnie Roth (Final Fantasy I, II & III), Benjamin Zander (Mahler Symphony 2), Fabio Mechetti (Opera – Carmen), Andreas Delf (Mozart Requiem), Roberto Abbado (Carmina Burana), Naohisa Furusawa (Beethoven Symphony 9), and Stanislav Kochanovsky (Queen of Spades). In 2017, Terrence performed Draco's role at the opera Maria and Draco at the Distant Worlds: Kuala Lumpur 30th Anniversary under Arnie Roth's baton with National Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, he performed with Indonesia Youth Choir as one of the four Malaysian representatives.
Terrence began his career as a choral conductor in 2016. Under his leadership, the ensembles win Gold medals at various international choir competitions, including the 1st World Virtual Choir Festival 2020; Rimini International Choral Competition 2020; 10th International Choir Festival, Grand Prix Pattaya 2019; 47th Festival of Songs Olomouc 2019; 3rd International Choral Competition in Croatia 2019; as well as the Grand Prix Winner of the 7th International Choir Festival, Grand Prix Pattaya 2017. In Croatia, Terrence received Special Conductors Prize at the competition for exceptional artistic impression. In 2018-2019, Terrence was appointed the Assistant Choral Conductor of Dithyrambic Singers for Carmina Burana, Queen of Spades, and Final Fantasy III with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Terrence debuted in the performance scene as a jazz drummer with Toro Cheng Trio at NeroFico in Kuala Lumpur in 2013. Since then, he has been working with artists and musicians from Malaysia, Scotland, Japan, USA, Indonesia, China, UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Thailand. Terrence also performed in jazz festivals and concerts, namely the Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival, Borneo Jazz Festival, World Youth Jazz Festival, Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival, Publika Jazz Festival, JB Arts Festival, and Singapore International Jazz Festival. Terrence endorses Canopus drums manufactured in Japan. Currently, he is the drummer of NewSound and JSY.
As a session vocalist, besides performing at local performing venues, he served as a backing vocalist for the finalists and singers at the Astro Classic Golden Melody Grand Final in both 2018 and 2019. He is also the backing vocalist at Nancy Wu's Concert in Malaysia 2019. Furthermore, he is the jury member of INTI Idol, KK Music and Dance Festival, Show Me Your Voice, Medics Intervarsity Games, China Beijing Water Cube Cup Regional Final, and Jean Sibelius International Choir Festival. Terrence has also been invited to present workshops and coaching sessions for voice, choir, worship band, and drums in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.
