The University Honors Program at The University of West Alabama is a selective academic experience designed for high-achieving students who want to make the most of their college education. Through honors coursework, undergraduate research, faculty mentorship, experiential learning, and a close-knit community of scholars, students challenge themselves academically and graduate prepared for competitive careers, graduate study, and lifelong learning. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn distinction as a UWA Honors Scholar.
Challenge Yourself
The University Honors Program launches in Fall 2027 with its first cohort of incoming freshmen. Students interested in joining the inaugural cohort should begin by applying for admission to UWA. Once admitted, students who meet the Honors Program’s qualifying GPA requirement will receive an email with information about completing the Honors application process.

A Four-Year Honors Experience
Year One
HR 100 — Honors Freshman Seminar (1 Credit)
Explore interdisciplinary topics while building connections with fellow honors students and faculty.
Year Two
HR 200 — Honors Sophomore Seminar (2 Credits)
Expand your leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking through advanced honors discussions and projects.
Year Three
HR 300 — Honors Experience (3 Credits)
Apply your learning through high-quality, hands-on learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, including industry immersion experiences, study away opportunities, internships, service learning, simulation-based training, and place-based learning.
Year Four
HR 400 — Honors Research (3 Credits)
Complete a faculty-mentored research or creative project in your field of study, present your research, and defend your Honors Portfolio to graduate as a University Honors Scholar.
Designed Around Your Degree
The University Honors Program complements your major without extending your path to graduation. Honors students have the opportunity to enroll in honors-designated sections of select Basic Curriculum courses while completing a sequence of Honors courses designed to build toward a faculty-mentored research project and Honors Portfolio. The Honors Director works alongside your college advisor and faculty mentor to help you make the most of your academic experience.
Scholarships Available
Eligible Honors students may receive scholarship support that can be combined with other university scholarships. Award amounts vary based on academic performance, financial need, and available funding.
Honors Admission
Competitive Admission
Admission to the University Honors Program is selective. Students must first apply and be accepted to The University of West Alabama. Admitted students who have a minimum 3.6 unweighted high school GPA will receive an email with information about the Honors Program and instructions for completing the additional application requirements.
Students invited to apply to the Honors Program will be asked to complete the following:
- Honors Program Application
- ACT score submission; a minimum composite score of 25 is required, and superscores are accepted
- Essay
- One letter of recommendation
- Final interview
Meeting the initial eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission to the University Honors Program. The Honors Admission Committee reviews completed applications and selects students for admission through a competitive review process.

The University Honors Program is designed to prepare students for success beyond graduation through personalized career and graduate school guidance. Honors students receive individualized support as they progress through their academic journey. From exploring career interests and graduate school options to developing résumés or curriculum vitae (CVs), personal statements, cover letters, and professional skills, students gain the tools and confidence to pursue their future goals.
